Stress Rupture Considerations in the Design of Large Aperture, Low Mass Composite Vacuum Windows

چکیده

Large vacuum vessels are often employed in High Energy and Nuclear Physics experiments to provide a volume for particle traverse in the absence of air molecules. The ends of these vessels generally have a large aperture which is closed with a thin membrane known as a vacuum window. To minimize the vacuum window mass, composites of Kevlar and Mylar have been used in window construction. Historically, these windows have been designed based on the ultimate tensile strength of the materials, however, following the costly failure of a 193 cm x 86 cm window, other design methods emerged. This paper reviews the history of window design and describes the window failure and possible causes. It further presents the phenomenon of stress rupture and describes the analytical and experimental work carried out to improve composite window design methods.

ارائه روشی جدید برای طراحی الگوی چال های انفجار در معادن روباز

A comprehensive investigation was carried out to minimize the cost price of the rock fragmentation process including: drilling, blasting, secondary blasting and separating the large boulders (oversize rocks) while loading, until the optimized fragmentation, powder factor and ratio of burden (B) to blasthole diameter (?h) were achieved by doing several stages of drilling and blasting practically...

Relationship between fracture dip angle, aperture and fluid flow in the fractured rock masses

Most of the Earth's crust contains fluids, and fractures are common throughout the upper part. They exist at a wide range of scales from micro-fractures within grains to major faults and shear zones that traverse the crust. In this paper, the stress-dependent permeability in fractured rock masses have been investigated considering the effects of nonlinear normal deformation and shear dilation o...

Uniaxial/Biaxial Stress Paradox in Optical-Materials Hardening

174 LLE Review, Volume 79 Owing to its excellent homogeneity and low-intrinsic absorption properties, fused silica remains the preferred material for high-power laser applications over a wide wavelength range, but especially in the UV. In particular, large-aperture glass and excimer lasers, such as Nova, Beamlet, OMEGA, NIKE, and, in the foreseeable future, the National Ignition Facility (NIF),...

Technical Note: Stress-Induced Birefringence in Vacuum Systems

Even scientific grade optical glasses show birefringence when small external forces are applied to the sample. Stress-induced birefringence can be particularly detrimental to the state of polarization of light when a laser beam is transmitted through the glass. This is especially the case for glass windows of a vacuum chamber. Since compensation of spatially inhomogeneous birefringence is extre...

Numerical modeling of the effects of joint hydraulic aperture, orientation and spacing on rock grouting using UDEC: A case study of Bakhtiary Dam of Iran

This study aims at presenting a numerical model for predicting grout flow and penetration length into the jointed rock mass using Universal Distinct Element Code (UDEC). The numerical model is validated using practical data and analytical method for grouting process. Input data for the modeling, including geomechanical parameters along with grout properties, were obtained from a case study. The...
